A GREENWAY TO CROSS ALES FROM THE NORTH TO THE SOUTH.
A first section of 4.8 miles for the non-motorized access is in progress by the banks of the Gardon.
4.8 miles for cycles, rollerblades, pedestrians and wheelchairs: the greenway will cross the town and link the Pôle Mécanique traffic circle (towards Saint-Martin) to the traffic circle of La Luquette (towards Saint-Christol). The route will also cross the Gardon on the Pont Vieux.
- It is the first step in a larger project of development of transportation for cycles and pedestrians in the framework of the sustainable development policy of Grand Alès Agenda 21 and of the planning of cycle tracks in Gard.
- The 2nd step (2010-2012) will be the creation of a service way between the city center and the Prés-Saint-Jean and the Cevennes neighborhoods.
- In a third step, extensions will be added to the main way towards Clavières, Croupillac, Rochebelle and Tamaris and then outside the town.
In the end the greenway will reach 18 miles on average for a total amount of 30M€.
Very Limited Speed Areas.
Max Roustan, Alès deputy and mayor, insists on the overall picture of such a project will place pedestrian and cycles at the center of any project of town planning and infrastructures. He has thought of very limited speed areas in which pedestrians will not have to walk on the sidewalk. In the same line of ideas, the redefinition of the 10–25 mph areas enables a double-circulation for cycles on the roads which are one-way for motor vehicles. Angle parkings will have to be inverted for the car to park in reversing so that they have a better visibility of pedestrians and cycles. And eventually, the asphalt should be marked to delimitate the cycle track.
Works on the first part of the Greenway
(from the Pôle Mécanique traffic circle to la Luquette traffic circle)
- The works started in December 2009 on the quays of the Gardon River, between Pont Vieux and Moulinet traffic circle.
On the Quai Jean Jaurès, between the Pont Vieux and the Rampe de la Meunière, the traffic is changed: the two ways have been kept from North to South at the exit of the town. From South to North, vehicles will now have only one way. A little farther, between the Rampe de la Meunière and the Pont de Rochebelle, enterprises are working on the creation of an isolated way which implies that the central circle should be moved.
By the beginning of January 2010, the works spread to the Quai du 11 novembre 1918, between the Pont de Resca and the pont de Brouzen. On this road, which runs alongside the back of the Lycée Jean Baptiste Dumas, the greenway is currently being built along the parapet of the Gardon River.
- Subsequently, the Greenway will have to be diverted to the other side of the river, thanks to the Pont Vieux, and eventually it will reach la Luquette traffic circle (towards Saint-Christol) via the Avenue Jules Guesde, the Quai de la Brigade du Haut-Languedoc and the South ring road.
