The Municipal Center of Pomology is the largest national resources center, specialized in fruit varieties.

Its main missions are to protect biodiversity, to study the species and varieties adapted to Mediterranean and temperate climates, to identify the innumerable varieties of fruits, old varieties or still existing varieties, and to circulate the results of its observations via publishing or conferences. It is also an educational center which aim is to familiarize people with the great diversity of species and varieties of fruits and with the conditions of their preservation. A resource center
With a library of about 1 800 reference books, 5 000 documents and 70 000 dossiers about species and varieties, the municipal center of pomology is a mine of information available for anyone. Here, the most complete set of knowledge possible is made available for public use thanks to the publishing and circulation of different media. The world of fruit varieties is both vast and complicated for neophytes. Works ( monographies, booklets, recipes), variety index card or teaching aids made by the pomology center will make it easier to understand pomology. A place of discovery and exchange
The many activities organized by the Municipal Center of Pomology bring both children and adults to wonder about fruits, their use, history, cultivation, or the importance of choosing the right variety. Through this theme, several problems are dealt with as far as seasons, nutrition, botany and biodiversity are concerned. A conservatory orchard*
As part of its research works and for the circulation of information, the municipal center of pomology has begun a project of preservation of the 18th century fruit varieties. In addition to its museographic function, this conservatory orchard has been created so as to be a place of preservation and observation of pomology. *The conservatory orchard was created with the contribution of the town of Alès, the Arc’Avène association (ethnobotanical garden managers), Rousson City Hall and the Senate.
