Cratère Théâtre of Alès
The Cratère was ranked National Stage in 1991, a seal of approval granted by the French Ministry of Culture to public theaters. The Cratère is one of the most important venues in Languedoc-Rousillon.
The Cratère receives more 80 000 spectators each year from September to July, and its shows are opened to art expression. Drama, dance, music, circus and street arts are favored as well as contemporary creation. The Cratère also has a policy of partnership and residency (Machine Théâtre, Lionnel Astier, Daniel Dobbels, Christine Jouve troupes, etc.).
The Cratère has an 885 seats room and a 69ft long stage with professional equipment. It is a very efficient performing tool which was renovated and enlarged in 2003 and 2005. A second room of 190 seats was added. The work that has been done in the Cratère enables this venue to claim to be part of the most important cultural centers in the region thanks to its capacity and for the quality of the shows it presents.
94% of the public comes from Gard, and the audience largely exceeds the Alès basin since 18% of the spectators comes from Nîmes, 15% from Uzès and 11% from Bagnols-sur-Cèze). The number of people who came to the Cratère over the last few years was exceptional ( 89% in 2005-2006, 83% in 2006-2007, 87% in 2007-2008 and 83% in 2008-2009).
> Cratère Surfaces
Street arts are the spearhead of the Cratère: with the Cratère Surfaces by the beginning of July, more than 120 artists of various nationalities come flooding in the streets of Alès for three days of free shows. This event is nationally recognized and largely attended.
