The tourist center of Alès and of the Cevennes is located in the city center just next to the City Hall. It was installed in the relics of the former Église des Cordeliers, built in the 11th century and which also housed the municipal theatre of Alès until the 1960's.
The building was renovated in 2001, and it is now the perfect example of sustainable development in the field of building since in April 2001 its façade was all covered with photovoltaic modules providing for the heating in winter and for the air-conditioning in summer. The Tourist Center of Alès was the first building in France and the third in Europe to be equipped in that way. In addition to the brochures about tourist attractions, hikes and accomodations in the Cevennes, Alès Tourist Center proposes an exhibition room, installed beneath restored vaults, devoted to the Cevennes heritage and culture. The Tourist Center also organizes guided tours and walks in the streets of Alès and in the vicinity of the town to make discover and enjoy the urban landscape and its many flowers. In 2008, The Grand Alès basin attracted 33 769 tourists coming from whole Europe, that is, 1 200 more than in 2007. As for 2009, the number of tourists should keep increasing and is planned to reach around 36 000 visitors. Here is a very useful link to the accomodations guide in which you will find every information about accomodations in the Cevennes. general information
